Laminate flooring comes in planks and tiles

Many homeowners opt for laminate floors because of their durability and good looks. This multi-layer, wood-based flooring is warm underfoot in all seasons. It is stain and scratch-resistant and appropriate for active households that include children and pets. Karrianna Flooring in Lexington, Kentucky, is a laminate flooring retailer that has a selection of laminate in many colors, styles, and textures. We offer free in-home shopping, too.

Four layers

The four layers that make up laminate planks and tiles are fused with a lamination process. The synthetic planks look like hardwood, while tiles usually look like hardwood, stone, or ceramic. Available textures include hand-scraped and distressed. Planks and tiles have a backing layer that protects the subfloor and the flooring. The fiberboard core is the thickest layer. A transparent wear layer protects the digital image layer.

AC rating

Laminate flooring must pass tests for swelling in wet conditions, abrasion, and resistance to burns, stains, and impact. Then an abrasion coefficient rating is assigned to each product based on the test results. The most durable brands have an AC5 rating. These brands are appropriate for heavy commercial applications like department stores. Laminate floors with an AC3 rating are ideal for the most active residences, and brands labeled 'AC4' are used in homes and businesses.

Standard vs. waterproof

Standard and waterproof laminate looks the same, but standard brands resist water while waterproof brands repel water for a specific time. This time is noted in the manufacturer's guidelines, and typically, it does not exceed 30 hours. If the flooring remains wet beyond this period, it may become damaged. Water will pool on the surface of standard laminate rather than sink in and saturate the core, but it should be cleaned up immediately.

Installation

Planks and most tiles feature a click and lock design that requires no bonding to the subfloor. Instead, the flooring connects to float above it. Installation over some existing floors and radiant heat systems is possible. Underlayment is placed beneath the flooring if it is not already pre-attached to it. Underlayment smooths out small imperfections in the subfloor, and it provides cushioning and reduces noise from footsteps.
