Rigid core luxury vinyl plank mimics hardwood flooring

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is a man-made wood-look floor covering. The practical and durable material has the same surface characteristics as wood, and there are even textured styles, like distressed and wire-brushed. But LVP does more than realistically mimic hardwood. Easy to clean planks resist dents, scratches, and stains. Karrianna Flooring in Lexington, Kentucky, offers a great selection of luxury vinyl flooring in many wood species, styles, and textures. Also, we have a hardworking installation team that is experienced and efficient.

Rigid core

LVP can be installed anywhere in the home, including basements, bathrooms, and mudrooms. The best brands have a lifespan of about 30 years. Some LVP brands feature an innovative core material that is unique to its manufacturer. But most brands have a wood plastic composite (WPC) or stone plastic composite (SPC) core. This rigid core LVP, also called engineered vinyl plank flooring, is waterproof. The flooring is stiff rather than flexible, like standard vinyl. However, WPC flooring feels softer underfoot because a foaming agent is used within the core.

WPC and SPC

A WPC core consists mainly of wood products, while the primary component in SPC is limestone. Virtually indestructible SPC is considered the superior product. But when considering lifestyle, WPC may be the better choice for a homeowner. Besides providing more cushioning underfoot, WPC offers better noise reduction since the foaming agent in the core absorbs sound. The WPC or SPC core has a backing layer beneath it and an image layer above it. The best brands have a 20+ mil wear layer to protect the wood image.

Installation

Luxury vinyl plank floors are easier to install than solid hardwood floors. A glueless installation is the norm. Planks click and lock together so the floor can be constructed to float above the subfloor. Rigid core vinyl covers up subfloor imperfections better than standard vinyl, but extensive damage needs to be repaired before installation. Vinyl flooring underlayment is usually placed between the flooring and subfloor. Floating floors can be installed over some existing floors and radiant heat systems.
